Germany Summer Intake 2027: Deadlines, APS, dMAT, Blocked Account and Visa Timing for Indian Students
The Germany summer intake 2027 (the Sommersemester) starts on 1 April 2027, with lectures at many universities beginning around 12 April. That sounds far away, but for an Indian applicant the real deadlines fall between late November 2026 and mid-January 2027, and APS verification and the visa have to fit around them. This guide works backwards from April so you can judge, honestly, whether summer 2027 is still realistic for you or whether winter 2027/28 is the better target. All rules and figures are as of October 2026 and can change, so verify each one on the official source before you act.
The summer semester is smaller and earlier than most students expect
Most German master's programmes are built around the winter semester (October start). Many offer no summer intake at all, and those that do often set an earlier deadline for their English-taught courses. Three examples from official university pages:
- University of Passau: applications open 1 November. Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence Engineering and Mathematics (M.Sc.) close on 15 December. Business Administration and Information Systems close on 15 January. Several master's programmes have no summer intake.
- Paderborn University: English-taught master's programmes close on 30 November, and German-taught programmes on 15 January.
- TU Dortmund: non-EU applicants generally apply from early November to 15 January, but some master's programmes close on 15 December.
The takeaway is simple: "15 January" is a common deadline, not a safe assumption. Check your exact programme's page, because for some English-taught courses the window closes in just a few weeks.
uni-assist: the deadline is when your complete file arrives
Most of these universities route non-EU applications through uni-assist. Passau lists the fee as €75 for the first university and €30 for each additional one. It also notes that uni-assist does not start processing until the fee is paid, and that the deadline applies to your complete application and payment. A slow international transfer can cost you the cycle.
Some universities ask for a VPD (preliminary review documentation) instead. uni-assist says a VPD usually takes 4 to 6 weeks and recommends requesting it "ideally at least 8 weeks before the deadline." For a 15 January deadline, that means applying by mid-November 2026.
APS and the new dMAT: the step most likely to rule out summer 2027
An APS certificate is almost always required for students with Indian qualifications, both for uni-assist and for the visa. APS India charges ₹18,000 (non-refundable). It does not publish a current processing time, and it says it cannot hold an application open while you wait for results. Our guide to the Germany student visa for Indian students covers the APS document list.
The bigger change is the dMAT (digital Master's Admission Test), which APS India added on 29 June 2026. It applies to master's applicants whose bachelor's degree is in an affected field: in this first phase, Engineering, Commerce/Accounting/Finance/Economics, or Business/Management. If you registered with APS and sent your documents on or after 29 June 2026, you need a dMAT certificate before APS will issue yours, for summer semester 2027 or any later intake.
Here is the timing problem. The first test was held on 26 September 2026, and registration closed on 15 September. APS India's notice of 29 October 2026 lists the next sessions as 16 January 2027 and 13 March 2027, and says these are aimed at students starting in Winter Semester 2027/28. If your degree is in an affected field and you did not sit the September test (and do not already hold an APS certificate), summer 2027 is very unlikely to work. Confirm your situation with APS India directly, especially if you registered before 29 June 2026, because the official FAQ does not clearly say how those applicants are treated.
Blocked account and visa: plan for the admission letter arriving late
According to the German Missions in India, the blocked account requirement is currently €11,904 for the first year, with withdrawals capped at €992 a month. You can also show a German sponsor's formal commitment, a German or EU scholarship, or an education loan. The national visa fee is €75 (₹8,300) for adults, and it is not refunded if your visa is refused.
You apply through the Consular Services Portal. The link to book your on-site appointment only appears after you finish the online application. The required documents include your university admission letter, your APS certificate, a motivation letter, health insurance from your arrival date, and proof of funds. The German Missions in India do not publish a processing time for student visas. Other German missions quote 2 to 5 weeks or "a minimum of approximately 4 weeks" from a complete application. Because summer-intake admission letters often arrive between February and March, the visa window before an April start is short. Open the blocked account and arrange insurance early, so the admission letter is the only thing you are waiting for.
A working-back timeline for summer 2027
- Already done, or not possible now: sitting the 26 September 2026 dMAT, if your field is affected.
- November 2026: APS documents sent; uni-assist or VPD application submitted, ideally 8 weeks before your deadline; English test results in hand.
- 30 November to 15 January: university deadlines, depending on the programme.
- January to February 2027: blocked account funded, insurance arranged, Consular Services Portal application ready to submit.
- February to March 2027: admission letter, visa appointment and decision.
- Late March to early April 2027: travel, before the semester starts on 1 April and lectures start around 12 April.

Summer 2027 or winter 2027/28?
- Summer 2027 can work if: you already hold an APS certificate (or your field isn't affected by the dMAT), your target programme actually has a summer intake, and you can submit a complete uni-assist application by mid-November.
- Winter 2027/28 is the better call if: you need the dMAT, your programme only admits in winter, or your documents (transcripts, English test, funds) aren't ready yet. Rushing an incomplete file means paying fees for an application that will be rejected.
Whichever intake you choose, the motivation letter matters. Our guide to writing an SOP for Germany explains what uni-assist and German universities look for. Our posts on studying in Germany for free and Germany's post-study work options cover the costs and what happens after graduation.
