Germany does not have a single "post-study work visa" like the UK Graduate Route or Canada's PGWP. Instead, the Germany post-study work route is a sequence of three permits: an 18-month residence permit to find a job, then an EU Blue Card or skilled-worker permit once you have one, then a settlement permit (permanent residence) that German graduates can reach in as little as two years of work. This post explains each step as of October 2026, using the rules published by Make it in Germany, the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) and the German Federal Foreign Office. Rules and salary thresholds change every year, so check the official pages before you apply.

Step 1: The 18-Month Job Seeker Permit After Graduation

Once you complete your degree at a German university, you can apply for a residence permit to look for work for up to 18 months (Section 20(3) no. 1 of the Residence Act). Three things matter:

  • Apply before your student permit expires. The application is made in person at your local foreigners authority (Ausländerbehörde); the federal service portal suggests applying 4–6 weeks before expiry, and processing can take 5–6 weeks. If your student permit lapses first, you lose this option.
  • You need proof of funds, health insurance and your degree. Funds can be shown through bank statements, a job contract or a formal declaration of commitment from a sponsor. Your final certificate or a university letter confirming completion is accepted. The fee listed on the federal portal is about €93–96.
  • You can work in any job. During these 18 months there are no restrictions, so a part-time or unrelated job to pay rent is fine while you search for a role that matches your degree.

The 18 months cannot be extended beyond the maximum. If you have not found qualifying work by the end, you must leave Germany or switch to another permit. Start your search in your final semester, not after your thesis is submitted. Working student (Werkstudent) jobs during your master's are often the most direct route to a full-time offer.

Step 2: EU Blue Card or Skilled-Worker Permit

Once you have a job offer, you switch to a work permit from inside Germany. Which one depends mainly on salary.

  • EU Blue Card, standard threshold: a gross annual salary of at least €50,700 (2026 figure, Make it in Germany).
  • EU Blue Card, reduced threshold: at least €45,934.20 for shortage occupations (such as academic STEM roles, doctors and ICT managers) and for new entrants who completed their last degree less than three years ago. Most fresh Indian graduates from a German master's fall into the new-entrant category. Federal Employment Agency approval is required for the reduced threshold.
  • Skilled-worker residence permit (Section 18b): for qualified jobs that pay below the Blue Card threshold. Unlike the Blue Card, the job does not have to match your field of study, and part-time offers can qualify if the salary covers your living costs.

The Blue Card has two advantages: a faster route to permanent residence and more flexibility to move within the EU. If you change jobs in your first year on a Blue Card, you must notify the foreigners authority, which checks that the new job still meets the requirements. The thresholds are reset every January, so check the current figure in your offer year.

Step 3: Permanent Residence (Settlement Permit)

This is where studying in Germany pays off. The standard settlement permit for skilled workers needs three years on a work permit, 36 months of pension contributions and German at B1. Graduates of German universities get easier terms:

  • German graduate route: 2 years on a skilled-worker permit, 24 months of pension contributions, German at B1 and the "Living in Germany" test.
  • EU Blue Card route: 27 months of qualified employment with statutory pension contributions and German at A1, or 21 months if you have German at B1. The "Living in Germany" test still applies.

Both routes reward German at B1. Many Indian students on English-taught master's programs ignore German until after graduation, then find it slows down both their job search and their PR. If you are still studying, aim for B1 before you graduate.

What If You Leave Without a Job?

If the 18 months run out, or you return to India first, Germany's Opportunity Card is a separate route back for job seekers. It has its own eligibility rules, so check them before relying on it. For anyone planning several years ahead, the takeaway is that the German post-study path is generous on paper. In practice, it depends on landing a job that clears the salary threshold within 18 months, and German language skills often make the difference.

Is Germany's Post-Study Route Right for You?

  • It suits you if: you are in a STEM, engineering or IT program, can reach B1 German during your degree, and want PR in roughly two years of work rather than five or more.
  • Think harder if: you plan to rely on English only, your field has weak German demand, or you will need to repay a large loan immediately. Starting salaries for new entrants are often close to the reduced threshold, not far above it.
