Germany Student Visa for Indian Students: Step-by-Step Guide (2026)

Germany is one of the few countries where a world-class degree comes with near-zero tuition — but the visa process has several India-specific requirements that catch students off guard. The APS certificate, a blocked account worth over ₹13 lakhs, and a new digital application portal all need to happen in the right sequence, well before your intake. Miss one step and you're looking at a delayed semester. This guide lays out exactly what you need and when.

Step 1: APS Certificate — Start Here, Not Last

Every Indian applicant for a Bachelor's or Master's program must obtain an APS certificate from the Academic Evaluation Centre (APS) India. It verifies that your Indian academic documents are genuine. The German consulate won't process your visa application without it — not slow it down, literally not open your file.

  • Cost: approximately ₹18,000 (non-refundable)
  • Processing time: several weeks — apply at least 4–6 months before your target intake
  • Validity: lifetime (one-time requirement)

This is the step most students learn about too late. At Goodwind, we walk students through APS preparation as the very first task — because everything else in the timeline depends on having it in hand. If you're planning for a September 2026 intake and haven't started your APS yet, talk to us now before the window gets tight.

Step 2: Open a Blocked Account (Sperrkonto)

Germany requires you to prove you can fund your own living costs without working illegally. The standard way to do this is a blocked account (Sperrkonto) — you deposit the full year's amount upfront, and can only withdraw a fixed monthly amount after arriving in Germany.

  • Required amount for 2026: €11,904 (approximately ₹13 lakhs), at €992/month
  • Providers: Fintiba, Expatrio, and Coracle are the commonly used options — all fully online
  • Timeline: allow 4–6 weeks from opening the account to receiving your Sperrbestätigung (confirmation letter)

The confirmation letter is a required document at your visa appointment. If your visa is rejected, the funds are returned to you. Germany also has a tuition-free advantage that makes this blocked account the main upfront cost — if you haven't read our breakdown of what studying in Germany actually costs Indian students, that's worth reading alongside this.

Step 3: Apply via the Digital Consular Services Portal

Since January 2025, Germany runs a digital-first application model through the Consular Services Portal (CSP) at digital.diplo.de. You upload documents online before your in-person appointment, which has dramatically cut waiting times compared to the old VFS queue system. The visa you need is the National Visa (Type D) for long-term study. Fee: €75 (~₹7,500), paid at appointment.

Prepare two complete sets of all documents (plus originals):

  • APS certificate
  • University admission letter
  • Blocked account confirmation (Sperrbestätigung)
  • Valid passport with at least two blank pages
  • Language proof — B2 in German (TestDaF/DSH/Goethe) or IELTS/TOEFL for English-taught programs
  • Health insurance for the full duration of stay
  • Completed visa application form and biometric photos

One of the most common mistakes we see at Goodwind is students arriving at their appointment with unrecognized blocked account providers or missing certified translations. A rejected appointment slot can mean weeks of delay — and as of July 2025, Germany has abolished the informal remonstration (appeal) process. If your application is rejected, your only option is a formal legal challenge or reapplying from scratch. Getting it right the first time matters more than ever.

Realistic Timeline for September 2026

Working backwards from a September intake:

  • Now (April–May): apply for APS certificate immediately if you haven't already
  • May–June: secure university admission, open blocked account
  • June–July: upload documents via CSP portal, book visa appointment
  • Processing time: 6–12 weeks from submission

The overall approval rate for Indian applicants is around 90–95% — but that assumes a complete, accurate application. Incomplete files, unrecognized financial proof providers, and missing APS certificates are the most common reasons applications stall.
