SOP for Germany: What uni-assist and German Universities Actually Look For
An SOP for Germany is not an American-style personal essay. German universities call it a letter of motivation (Motivationsschreiben), and at many programmes it is scored on a points sheet next to your grades and course credits. Indian students often write one long, emotional statement, upload it to uni-assist, and reuse it for every university. That is the fastest way to lose points. Here is who actually reads your letter, how it is scored, and what to put in it.
Does uni-assist Read Your SOP?
Mostly, no. uni-assist is a pre-screening service used by roughly 170–180 German universities. It checks whether your Indian degree meets the formal entry requirements, converts your grades to the German scale, and forwards a complete application to each university you picked. The admission decision, including any judgment on your motivation letter, is made by the university's own selection committee.
That has two practical consequences:
- uni-assist rejects on paperwork, not writing. A missing APS certificate, an unattested transcript, or a document in the wrong format stops your application before any professor sees your letter.
- One upload does not mean one letter. uni-assist asks you to upload shared documents like transcripts only once, but your motivation letter should be different for each programme. Name each file clearly (e.g. Motivation_TU-Berlin_MSc-Computer-Science.pdf) so the wrong version is never attached.
Fees as of October 2026 are €75 for your first application in a semester and €30 for each additional one. Check the current amounts on uni-assist.de before paying.
How German Universities Score the Letter
Many competitive programmes run an aptitude assessment (Eignungsfeststellungsverfahren) with published scoring rules. TUM's MSc Informatics is a good example of how this works. Out of 100 points in the first stage:
- Academic qualification: up to 55 points, based on how well your bachelor's courses match TUM's computer science and maths fundamentals
- Final grade: up to 20 points, converted using the Bavarian formula
- Letter of motivation: up to 10 points, scored by two evaluators on motivation, commitment, and interest
- Essay: up to 15 points, around 1,000 words on a topic set by the committee, scored on structure, argument, and academic foundation
Under these published rules, applicants with 70+ points pass, those with 50–69 go to an interview, and those below 50 are rejected. So the letter will rarely make up for a weak course match, but 10 points is often exactly the gap between direct admission and an interview, or between an interview and rejection. Many other universities don't publish their scoring, but they use a similar approach: course fit first, grades second, letter as a tiebreaker.
What German Committees Want in a Motivation Letter
German professors want a factual, academic document. University guidance, such as Göttingen's advice for master's applicants, comes back to the same four points:
- Why this specific programme: name modules, research groups, or lab focus areas and connect them to your own coursework. A generic letter that could be sent to any university scores poorly. TUM's guidance explicitly says the letter must name the programme and the university.
- Academic preparation: the subjects, projects, or thesis that prepared you, with specifics such as tools, methods, and results, not adjectives.
- Learning interests: what you want to study in depth and why. For research-heavy programmes, a short outline of a possible master's thesis topic is a strong signal.
- Goals after the degree: a concrete plan, such as the role, industry, or research path you are aiming for.
What to cut: repeating your CV, summarising the curriculum back to the reader (they wrote it), flattery about "world-class excellence", and childhood stories. If your degree has gaps or backlogs, address them in one or two factual sentences. Our guide on explaining a low GPA or backlogs covers how to do it.
Length and Format: Follow Each Programme's Rules Exactly
uni-assist describes motivation letters as "usually one or two pages", but the programme's rule always applies. Examples of how widely this varies:
- TUM MSc Informatics: statement of reasons up to 2 A4 pages, plus a separate ~1,000-word essay
- LMU MSc Economics: 2,000–3,000 characters including spaces (roughly 350–500 words), pasted as plain text into a form field
- TU Berlin (selected programmes): maximum 2 A4 pages
Going over a character limit can mean your text is cut off mid-sentence or the application is rejected outright. Some programmes also ask for a signed declaration that the letter is your own work, so an AI-written draft is a real risk. See our post on ChatGPT and SOPs for details. Rules change every intake, so check the programme page before submitting. For a cross-country comparison, see SOP word limits by country.
You May Need a Second SOP for the German Visa
The German Missions in India list a "statement of purpose / motivation letter" on the national student visa checklist, next to the APS certificate, admission letter, and blocked account proof. This letter has a different reader: a visa officer who wants to see that your study plan makes sense, you can fund it, and your career logic holds together. Don't just resubmit your university letter. Read university SOP vs visa SOP to see what changes, and our Germany student visa guide for the full document list.
Your Checklist Before You Submit
- Download each programme's admission rules (Zulassungssatzung or FPSO) and note its letter length, essay, and declaration requirements.
- Write one letter per programme, naming that programme and university, and naming the file to match.
- Map 3–4 of your bachelor's courses or projects to specific modules in their curriculum.
- Get your APS certificate and uni-assist documents in order early. A rejection at that stage means no one reads your letter.

Germany rewards precise, programme-specific letters more than polished storytelling. Run your draft through Goodwind's free SOP Scorer to see where it falls short, or book a consultation with Goodwind and we'll review your letter against each university's requirements, along with your APS and uni-assist paperwork.
