Can You Use ChatGPT to Write Your SOP? What Universities Actually Allow (and Detect)

Short answer: you can use ChatGPT to help with your SOP, but you cannot use it to write your SOP. That line is now written into application declarations at UCAS, the Common App and a growing list of universities. This post covers what the rules actually say, what admissions teams can and can't detect, and the specific risk AI detectors pose for Indian applicants who write their own statements. For the general how-to, see our guide on how to write an SOP that gets you in.

What the Rules Actually Say

Policies vary, but they cluster into three groups:

  • Outright bans: Brown University says AI use is "not permitted under any circumstances" for application content (spell-check aside). Georgetown prohibits AI tools for any portion of the application, including essays.
  • Brainstorming and grammar only: Caltech, Cornell and UVA allow AI for researching schools, brainstorming and grammar checks — but not for outlining, drafting or translating your essay.
  • Editing allowed, writing not: The University of California lets applicants use AI "to assist with readability, but content and final written text must be their own." Carnegie Mellon similarly allows AI for grammar, structure and vocabulary suggestions.

For UK applicants, UCAS is explicit: submitting "all or a large part" of your personal statement from a tool like ChatGPT "could be considered cheating," and every applicant declares their statement wasn't provided by "artificial intelligence software." UCAS does endorse AI for brainstorming, suggesting structure and checking readability. The Common App's fraud policy treats submitting the substantive output of an AI tool as your own work as fraud.

Most master's programmes haven't published a separate AI policy yet. Don't read silence as permission — the general rule that the SOP must be your own work still applies, and the declaration you sign when you submit usually says so. Policies as of October 2026 — check each university's admissions page before you apply.

Can Universities Actually Detect ChatGPT?

Not reliably by software alone. OpenAI shut down its own AI-text classifier in July 2023, citing a "low rate of accuracy" — at launch it correctly flagged only 26% of AI-written text. UCAS doesn't claim to run an AI detector; it runs similarity checks across all personal statements and notifies universities when patterns match. That matters more than it sounds: thousands of applicants giving ChatGPT the same prompt get statements with the same structure, the same openings and the same phrases.

The real detection is human. An admissions reader who has seen 400 SOPs this cycle recognises the AI pattern quickly:

  • Openers like "Ever since I was a child, I have been fascinated by..." or "In today's rapidly evolving world..."
  • Polished, generic claims with no specific project, number, professor or course module
  • Words like "delve," "tapestry," "foster" and "multifaceted" in an essay from a 22-year-old engineering graduate
  • A writing style that doesn't match your LORs, your test writing score, or how you speak in an interview

An SOP doesn't have to be "caught" to fail. A generic statement simply scores low against applicants who wrote something specific. We cover this in 5 SOP mistakes that get Indian students rejected.

The Risk Nobody Tells Indian Students About

AI detectors are worse at judging non-native English writers. A 2023 Stanford study ran essays written by non-native speakers for the TOEFL through seven popular AI detectors: over 61% were wrongly flagged as AI-generated, and 97% were flagged by at least one detector. The cause is that detectors treat simple, predictable word choice as a sign of AI — and that is how many careful second-language writers write.

Two practical consequences. First, don't panic if a free online detector flags an SOP you wrote yourself — those scores are unreliable. Second, keep your drafts. Google Docs version history or dated Word files are simple proof that you wrote the statement over weeks, if a university ever asks.

Visa SOPs Raise the Stakes

For a Canada study permit or an Australian Genuine Student statement, your SOP goes to an immigration officer, not just a university. Whatever you write there can be compared with your interview answers, your documents and anything you submit later. If ChatGPT invented a career plan you can't explain in your own words, that inconsistency is a credibility problem — and credibility is the main reason student visas get refused. See our guides to the Canada study plan and the Australia GS requirement.

How to Use AI Without Crossing the Line

Safe uses, permitted by most policies (unless your university bans AI outright, like Brown):

  • Brainstorming: ask it to question you about your projects and goals, then write the answers yourself
  • Research: ask what a program is known for, then check the university's own course page — AI often gets module names and faculty wrong
  • Grammar and clarity: paste in your own finished paragraph and ask for typo and grammar fixes, not a rewrite
  • Word count: ask which sentences are repetitive, then make the cuts yourself

Avoid asking it to "write my SOP for MS in Data Science," to "make this sound more professional" (that replaces your voice with its own), or to translate a draft you wrote in Gujarati or Hindi — Caltech and Cornell explicitly prohibit AI translation. Before you submit, read each paragraph aloud and ask yourself: could I explain every claim here in an interview?

Check Your SOP Before It Goes Out

If you've written your own SOP and want to know whether it reads as specific and personal — or generic — run it through Goodwind's free SOP Scorer. It scores your statement across six dimensions in under a minute. For a line-by-line review from someone who reads SOPs for US, UK, Canadian and Australian applications every week, book a consultation with Goodwind.
