SOP for Canada Student Visa: What IRCC Officers Actually Want to See (2026)
The SOP you send with your Canada student visa application is not the SOP you sent your university. The university already said yes. The study plan (IRCC calls it a letter of explanation) goes to an immigration officer who is asking a different question: is this person a genuine student who will follow the rules and leave Canada when their status ends? With IRCC refusing roughly 74% of Indian study permit applications in August 2025, according to government data reported in Indian and international media, a generic study plan is one of the easiest ways to lose a year. Here is what officers actually look for.
What IRCC Officially Asks For
IRCC's own document checklist lists the letter of explanation as recommended, not mandatory, and says only that you must explain why you want to study in Canada and show that you understand your responsibilities as an international student. That brevity is deceptive. When an officer refuses a file, the most common reasons are exactly the things a good study plan is meant to answer. ApplyBoard's analysis of 2024 refusals found:
- Not convinced you will leave Canada after your studies: cited in just over 75% of refusals
- Insufficient financial support: the second most common reason
- Purpose of visit not consistent with a temporary stay: third
Refused files carried an average of 2.7 reasons each. Treat "recommended" as "required." Skipping the letter leaves the officer to fill the gaps with assumptions, and those assumptions rarely go in your favour.
The Four Questions Your Study Plan Must Answer
1. Why this program, given your background? Officers look for a straight line from what you studied or worked on, to this specific program, to a specific job. A B.Com graduate with three years in accounts moving into a one-year project management diploma needs to explain that jump. A B.Tech graduate taking a college diploma below the level of their degree needs an even stronger reason, because "credentials exceeding program level" is a classic red flag.
2. Why Canada, and why not India? Officers are allowed to weigh whether an expensive program abroad makes sense when similar options exist at home. Name what Canada offers that you cannot get locally: a co-op component, a specific lab or faculty member, industry accreditation, or a curriculum you can point to. "Canada has world-class education" says nothing.
3. What will you do after you graduate? Describe a realistic role back in India: the job title, the kind of employer, and ideally a salary range or a named company that hires for it. If your family business or current employer will take you back, say so and attach proof.
4. Why will you leave? Family, property, a job offer, a business, or a career path that only makes sense in India. In one Federal Court case involving an Indian applicant, the officer found the study plan was "general information… not personal to the Applicant" with little connection to her stated goals, and the refusal was upheld. Specificity is the entire game.
Money: Show It, Then Explain It
From 1 September 2026, the minimum living-cost amount for a single student outside Quebec is CAD 23,448 (up from CAD 22,895), on top of your first-year tuition and travel costs. Your study plan should briefly connect the dots the officer sees in your documents: who is paying, where the money came from, and why it is stable. A large deposit that appeared last month with no explanation is a common trigger for a financial refusal. Figures as of September 2026 — verify on canada.ca before applying.

Mistakes That Get Indian Applicants Refused
- Reusing your university SOP. It sells you to an admissions committee. The officer needs intent, finances, and ties.
- Leading with PR. Canadian law recognises dual intent, so hoping for permanent residence someday is not disqualifying on its own. But a plan built around the PGWP and immigration reads as a work-and-settle plan, not a study plan.
- Agent templates. Officers read thousands of letters from the same regions. Identical phrasing across files is noticed, and you are responsible for everything submitted in your name.
- Unexplained gaps. A two-year gap after graduation needs a sentence, backed by evidence of what you were doing.
If you have already been refused, request your GCMS notes to see the officer's actual reasoning before you reapply. Our guide on what to do after a visa refusal walks through the process.
How to Structure It
Keep it tight: most strong study plans run one to two pages (see our SOP word limit guide). A structure that works: your background in two or three sentences, why this program and institution, why Canada over India, your post-study career plan in India, your ties and reasons to return, and a short funding summary. Write it yourself, in plain English. For the craft of writing a personal statement that does not sound machine-made, read how to write an SOP that actually gets you in.
Get a Second Pair of Eyes Before You Submit
A study plan is one to two pages, but it can decide the whole application. Run your draft through Goodwind's free SOP Scorer to see where it is vague or generic, then book a consultation with our team to review it against your documents, funds, and refusal risks before it goes to IRCC.
