Canada's Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) in 2026: What Indian Students Need to Know

The Post-Graduation Work Permit is why most Indian families choose Canada over other destinations — it's the only major study-abroad country that hands graduates an open work permit with no employer sponsorship required. But the PGWP isn't automatic anymore. Since November 2024, IRCC added language and field-of-study requirements that catch students off guard, and getting the details wrong at the program-selection stage can cost you the permit entirely.

What the PGWP Actually Gets You

A PGWP is an open work permit — you can work for any employer, in any occupation, anywhere in Canada, with no Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) needed. It's issued once per person, per lifetime. If you already held a PGWP after an earlier program, a second one isn't available, so stacking diplomas to "reset" your eligibility doesn't work.

How Long Your PGWP Will Actually Last

Length depends on your program and your passport — whichever is shorter. As a rule of thumb: an 8-month to under-2-year program gets a PGWP matching that length, and a program of 2 years or more gets a 3-year permit. Master's degree students get a specific advantage — since February 2024, master's graduates qualify for a full 3-year PGWP even if their program was shorter than 2 years, as long as they meet the other criteria. If your passport expires before your permit would, the permit is cut short to match — plan your passport renewal before you apply.

The Language and Field-of-Study Rules That Trip People Up

Two rules now apply to almost every applicant. First, a language test: bachelor's, master's, and PhD graduates need CLB/NCLC 7 across all four abilities; most diploma and certificate graduates need CLB 5. Your results can't be older than two years at the time you apply. Second, a field-of-study check — if your study permit was applied for on or after November 1, 2024 and you're in a non-degree program (diploma, certificate, post-grad certificate), your program must be on IRCC's eligible-fields list, checked by its Classification of Instructional Programs (CIP) code. Bachelor's, master's, and PhD programs are exempt from this check regardless of subject. IRCC froze this eligible-fields list in January 2026, so no programs are being added or removed for the rest of the year — useful stability if you're choosing a college diploma right now, since the list won't shift under you mid-application.

The 180-Day Deadline You Cannot Miss

You must apply within 180 days of receiving official confirmation that you completed your program — and your study permit must have been valid at some point during that window. There are no exceptions for missing it by even a day. Other basics: your program must have been at least 8 months of full-time study (900 hours for Quebec programs), and you must have stayed full-time every semester except your final one. Applications now go online only — border "flagpoling" applications are no longer accepted.

From PGWP to PR: The Real Pathway

The PGWP itself doesn't grant permanent residence — it buys you the Canadian work experience that PR programs actually score. Twelve months of skilled work on a PGWP typically qualifies you for the Canadian Experience Class through Express Entry. Get This Right Before You Choose a Program

• Choose a degree if PR is the goal: bachelor's and master's programs skip the field-of-study restriction entirely.
• Choosing a diploma anyway? Confirm its CIP code is on IRCC's current eligible list before you enrol — not after.
• Book your language test early: IELTS/CELPIP slots near graduation season fill up fast, and a late score can blow your 180-day window.
• Check your passport validity against your expected PGWP length before you apply — a permit is only issued for as long as your passport is valid.
