When to Start Your Study Abroad Application: A Month-by-Month Timeline

The short answer: start your study abroad application 15–18 months before your intake. For a September 2027 start, that means serious work should have begun in spring 2026. Most deadlines for the US, UK, Canada and Australia fall between October and January — a full 8–11 months before classes begin — and visas, loans and accommodation eat up most of the time after that. This timeline works backwards from a September (Fall) intake, which is what most Indian students target. If you're aiming for a January or February intake, shift everything roughly four months earlier.

15–12 Months Before: Decide Where, and Book Your Tests

For Fall 2027: April–August 2026. For Fall 2028: start now.

This is the stage most students rush, and it shows later. Before you shortlist a single university, decide on country and budget — the gap between countries is ₹20–40 lakhs over a degree (see our cost of studying abroad breakdown). Then:

  • Book your tests early. Plan to take the GRE or GMAT and IELTS/PTE by August, leaving room for one retake. Not sure which you need? Read GRE vs GMAT and IELTS vs PTE vs Duolingo.
  • Talk to your recommenders. Professors and managers write better letters with three months' notice, not three weeks'.
  • Check loan eligibility. If you'll need an education loan, find out now whether you need collateral — it changes your budget, and therefore your shortlist.

12–9 Months Before: Shortlist, Write, and Submit

For Fall 2027: September 2026 – January 2027.

This is the busiest stretch, and the deadlines are fixed. The key dates for a 2027 intake (verify each on the university's own admissions page):

  • UK undergraduate (UCAS): applications opened in September 2026. The deadline for Oxford, Cambridge and most medicine courses was 15 October 2026; the equal-consideration deadline for most other courses is 13 January 2027.
  • US undergraduate: Early Decision/Early Action deadlines are mostly 1 November 2026; Regular Decision falls on 1 or 15 January 2027.
  • US master's and PhD: most selective programs close between 1 December 2026 and 15 January 2027, and funded PhD deadlines are often the earliest.
  • Canada: the University of Toronto's deadline for most programs is 15 January 2027, and many universities close earlier for international students to allow time for study permits.
  • UK postgraduate: most master's programs use rolling admissions. Officially they close in spring or summer, but popular courses fill up — and scholarship deadlines come much earlier. Apply by December.

Leave at least six weeks for your SOP. Each country reads it differently — see our guides for the USA, UK and Canada. Scholarship deadlines such as Chevening's usually fall in this window too (see our scholarships guide).

8–5 Months Before: Offers, Money, and Decisions

For Fall 2027: February – April 2027.

Offers arrive between February and April. Compare total cost (not just tuition), scholarships and post-study work rights before you accept. Two things are often left too late here:

  • Loan sanction letters take 2–6 weeks, and visa officers want to see funds that are actually in place, not just applied for.
  • Deposits trigger your visa document: the I-20 (US), CAS (UK), letter of acceptance (Canada) or CoE (Australia). You can't apply for a visa until you have it.

5–1 Months Before: Visa, Then Travel

For Fall 2027: April – August 2027.

Each country has its own visa window, and they work very differently:

  • USA (F-1): a visa can be issued up to 365 days before your program starts, but you can't enter the US more than 30 days before your start date. Interview slots in India are the real bottleneck, so book as soon as you have your I-20 and have paid the SEVIS fee. Read common F-1 mistakes before your interview.
  • UK (Student visa): the earliest you can apply is 6 months before your course starts, and a decision usually takes about 3 weeks from India.
  • Canada (study permit): with the SDS fast track gone, standard processing from India has been running at roughly 8–12 weeks, and longer in the May–August peak. Master's and PhD students at public universities no longer need a Provincial Attestation Letter (since 1 January 2026), but undergraduate and college students still do — build in time to get one.
  • Australia (Subclass 500): apply as soon as your CoE is issued, and get your Genuine Student answers right the first time.

Processing times and rules change often. Treat these as of October 2026, and check travel.state.gov, gov.uk, canada.ca or immi.homeaffairs.gov.au before you apply. Once your visa is approved, book accommodation (university housing fills by June) and flights.

Already Behind? Here's What to Do

  • Targeting Fall 2027 and haven't started: you can still make January deadlines in the US, UK and Canada, but only if you take your tests this month. If that isn't realistic, a January/February 2028 intake or Fall 2028 is a better plan than a rushed application.
  • Targeting Fall 2028: you're right on time. Use the next six months for tests, your shortlist and building your profile.
  • Considering a January intake: fewer programs offer one, and scholarships are thinner — check that your course actually runs in January before planning around it.
