Cost of Studying Abroad from India in 2026: USA, UK, Canada, Australia and Germany Compared
The cost of studying abroad from India comes down to two numbers: tuition, which varies enormously by university, and living costs, which governments now set for you through their proof-of-funds rules. This post puts both in rupees for the five countries Indian students ask us about most, using the official visa figures in force as of September 2026. Exchange rates used: $1 = ₹96, £1 = ₹127, CAD 1 = ₹68, AUD 1 = ₹68, €1 = ₹109.
The Quick Comparison (Master's, Per Year)
| Country | Typical tuition | Living costs (visa minimum) | Realistic yearly total |
|---|---|---|---|
| USA | ₹24–53 lakh | ₹14–24 lakh (set by your university's I-20) | ₹40–78 lakh |
| UK | ₹19–44 lakh (whole course, usually 1 year) | ₹13–18 lakh for 9 months | ₹34–63 lakh (full degree) |
| Canada | ₹16–34 lakh | ₹16 lakh | ₹32–50 lakh |
| Australia | ₹15–44 lakh | ₹20 lakh | ₹37–66 lakh |
| Germany (public) | ₹0–3.3 lakh | ₹13 lakh (blocked account) | ₹14–17 lakh |
Two things this table hides: course length and the rupee. A 1-year UK master's and a 2-year US or Canadian master's are not the same purchase — multiply the yearly figure by the number of years. And the rupee has fallen roughly 8% against the dollar in the past year alone, so build a 5–10% currency buffer into any plan.
USA: Highest Ceiling, Widest Range
US universities don't have a single price. The College Board puts average published tuition at private non-profit universities at $45,000 for 2025-26; international students at public universities pay out-of-state rates, typically $25,000–40,000. Living costs are set by each university on your I-20 — usually $15,000–25,000 a year depending on the city — and that's the figure you must show funds for at your visa interview.
Visa costs have also climbed: the $185 MRV fee, $350 SEVIS fee, and the $250 visa integrity fee introduced in October 2025 add up to about $785 (roughly ₹75,000) before you've paid a single application fee. US application fees run $75–150 per university, so applying to eight schools is another ₹60,000–1 lakh. If you're weighing whether the US is still worth this, read our honest take on studying in the USA in 2026.
UK: Expensive Per Year, Cheaper Per Degree
Average international master's tuition in the UK is about £17,100 for classroom-based courses and £20,200 for lab-based ones, with MBAs and top London programmes going well above that. Because most master's degrees finish in 12 months, the total degree often costs less than a 2-year alternative elsewhere.
For the visa, you currently need to show £1,529/month in London or £1,171/month elsewhere, for up to 9 months, held for 28 consecutive days. For applications from 30 November 2026 this rises to £1,570 and £1,203 (£14,130 and £10,827 for nine months). Add the £558 visa fee and the Immigration Health Surcharge of £776 per year. Full details are in our UK student visa 2026 update.
Canada: Moderate Tuition, Rising Funds Requirement
Statistics Canada puts average international graduate tuition at CAD 24,028 for 2025/26 (MBAs excluded), though Toronto, UBC and McGill programmes commonly run CAD 35,000–50,000. From 1 September 2026, IRCC requires a single applicant outside Quebec to show CAD 23,448 for living costs — on top of first-year tuition and travel. See our Canada student visa 2026 guide for the rest of this year's changes.
Australia: The Steepest Visa Fee
Master's tuition for international students generally ranges from AUD 22,000 to 65,000 a year, with engineering, health and MBA programmes at the top end. The living-cost requirement is AUD 29,710 for 12 months, and the student visa application charge rose to AUD 2,500 (about ₹1.7 lakh) on 1 July 2026 — the highest student visa application fee of the five countries. You'll also need Overseas Student Health Cover for your whole stay. Our Subclass 500 guide covers the full process.
Germany: Low Tuition, Not Free Living
Most public universities charge no tuition, only a semester contribution (typically €150–400). The exception is Baden-Württemberg, which charges non-EU students €1,500 per semester. The real cost is living: your visa requires a blocked account of €11,904 (€992/month), and public student health insurance adds roughly €140 a month. Private universities charge €10,000–20,000+ a year. The catch is that most affordable programmes need strong academics, and some need German. We break this down in Study in Germany for Free.
Which Country Fits Your Budget?
- Under ₹20 lakh a year: Germany's public universities are realistically the only option — if your academic profile qualifies.
- ₹35–60 lakh for the whole degree: a 1-year UK master's, ideally outside London, is the most direct fit.
- ₹65 lakh–1 crore for a 2-year degree: Canada at the lower end (especially outside Toronto and Vancouver), Australia towards the top.
- ₹80 lakh+ for a 2-year degree: the USA becomes viable, and US STEM programmes offer the strongest post-study earning window to recover the cost.
Whichever you choose, the proof-of-funds amount is a floor, not a budget. Flights, deposits, health cover, the first month's rent and the currency buffer all come on top. For how costs sit alongside work rights and PR prospects, see our US vs Canada vs UK comparison.
