Scholarships for Indian Students to Study Abroad in 2027: UK, USA, Canada and Australia

Most scholarships for Indian students studying abroad are not lost on merit. They are lost on timing. The biggest UK awards for 2027 entry close in October 2026, long before most students have even shortlisted universities. This guide covers the scholarships that are realistic for Indian applicants in the UK, USA, Canada and Australia, what each one actually pays, and the deadlines you need to know right now. Figures are as of September 2026 — confirm on the official site before applying.

UK Scholarships for Indian Students: The Big Three

The UK has the most government-funded options open to Indians, and all of them are for one-year taught master's programmes.

• Chevening Scholarship (UK government): Full tuition, a monthly living allowance, return economy airfare and visa fees. You need at least 2,800 hours of work experience after graduation (roughly two years full-time), must apply to three eligible UK courses, and must return to India for at least two years after your degree. The 2027–28 deadline is 6 October 2026, 11:00 UTC. Results come out around June 2027.
• Commonwealth Master's Scholarships: India is on the 2027–28 eligible list. The award covers tuition, airfare and a monthly stipend of £1,712 (£2,000 in London). The CSC closes on 20 October 2026, but Indian applicants must also be nominated through the national nominating agency, which runs its own process — check the CSC website for India's nominator this week, not next month.
• GREAT Scholarships (British Council): £10,000 (about ₹12 lakh) off tuition for a one-year master's. For 2026–27 there were awards at 13 universities including Bristol, Surrey, Reading, Queen's University Belfast, Dundee and the Royal College of Art. You apply through each university's own scholarship page, and deadlines vary — usually in spring.

Beyond these, almost every UK university offers its own India-specific merit awards, typically £2,000–£5,000 off tuition. They are smaller but far less competitive, and many are applied automatically when you get an offer. Cambridge's Gates scholarship and Oxford's Rhodes are fully funded but among the most competitive awards in the world — apply if your profile is exceptional, but don't build your budget around them.

USA: Funding Comes From the University, Not the Government

The US has one major government scholarship for Indians — the Fulbright-Nehru Master's Fellowship (run by USIEF) — which needs at least three years of relevant full-time work experience. The 2027–28 round closed on 1 July 2026, so anyone applying now is looking at the 2028–29 cycle.

For most Indian students, real US funding comes from universities themselves: teaching and research assistantships that waive tuition and pay a stipend. These are standard for PhD students and possible, but not guaranteed, for MS students — they usually go to those who contact professors early and have relevant research or projects. For undergraduates, need-based aid at a handful of universities (such as the Tata Scholarship at Cornell) is the main route.

Canada: Strong for Undergrads and Research, Thin for Course-Based Master's

The standout for undergraduates is the University of Toronto's Lester B. Pearson International Scholarship: 37 awards a year covering tuition, books, fees and full residence for four years. Your school must nominate you by 9 October 2026, you apply to U of T by 16 October, and the scholarship form is due 6 November.

At the graduate level, Canada's well-known Vanier scholarship has been discontinued and replaced by the Canada Graduate Research Scholarship – Doctoral, which is for PhD students only. Course-based master's programmes at Canadian colleges and universities rarely come with meaningful funding, so budget for the full cost. Australia: Ignore the Australia Awards Myth

Many websites list Australia Awards Scholarships as open to Indians. They are not — India is not on the Australian government's list of participating countries. What does exist:

• University merit scholarships: Usually 10–50% off tuition, offered by universities such as Sydney, Monash, ANU, Adelaide and Deakin. These are the most common awards Indian students actually receive.
• Maitri Scholarships: A program specifically for Indian citizens doing a research master's or PhD in STEM fields such as clean energy, critical minerals and advanced manufacturing. You don't apply directly — your Australian university nominates you.
• Research Training Program (RTP): Covers tuition and a stipend for research degrees, awarded by each university.

India-Based Funding That Works for Any Country

Don't overlook Indian trusts. The JN Tata Endowment offers loan scholarships for postgraduate study abroad in any discipline, and the Inlaks Shivdasani Foundation funds master's and doctoral study at top institutions in the UK, US and Europe for applicants under 30 with a strong first-class degree. Both are competitive, but they can be combined with university awards and an education loan.

What to Do Right Now

• If you have 2+ years of work experience and want the UK: start your Chevening application today, and check your Commonwealth nomination route this week.
• If you're in Class 12 and aiming for Canada: ask your school about a Pearson nomination before 9 October.
• If you're applying for an MS in the US: email professors about assistantships before you submit applications, not after admits arrive.
• For everyone: apply early to universities. Most university merit awards are given in the first admission rounds, and the money runs out.
