UK January Intake 2027: Is It Too Late, and How the CAS-to-Visa Timeline Works
If you're looking at the UK January intake 2027 in late October or November, the question isn't whether universities are still accepting applications. Several are. The question is whether your offer, deposit, CAS, money and visa can all line up before a course that starts around 11 January. This guide works backwards from that date using official UK Visas and Immigration rules (checked on gov.uk, as of October 2026) and the published deadlines of two UK universities, so you can see what is still realistic.
What university deadlines actually look like
January deadlines are earlier and tighter than most students assume, and they vary a lot between universities. Two examples from official university pages:
- University of Kent: term starts 11 January 2027. Postgraduate taught applications close 27 November 2026, the bank-transfer deposit deadline is 23 November, and funds must be cleared in your account by 16 November to meet the visa's 28-day rule before the CAS deadline. All CAS checks, including the deposit, must be done by 15 December.
- Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU): programmes start 11 January 2027. Applications close 30 October 2026, the deposit deadline is 23 November and the CAS issuing deadline is 30 November.
So in practice, "is it too late?" depends on the specific university. Some January programmes will already be closed by the time you read this; others accept applications until late November. Check each university's own international deadlines page, not a consultant's summary list.
The UK visa rules that set the timeline
Once you have an offer, the Student visa rules decide how much time you really need:
- CAS: after you accept an unconditional offer and complete the university's checks, it issues a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies. You must apply for your visa within 6 months of receiving it.
- Earliest application: 6 months before your course starts, so timing from India isn't the constraint for January.
- Decision time: usually within 3 weeks when you apply from outside the UK. Faster priority services (£500 or £1,000 extra) exist for many visas, but gov.uk says you'll only find out if one is available when you apply, so don't plan around it.
- The 28-day funds rule: unless you're exempt, you must show living costs of £1,171 a month outside London or £1,529 a month in London, for up to 9 months (£10,539 or £13,761), plus any unpaid first-year tuition. The money must be held for at least 28 days in a row, and the end of that 28-day period must fall within 31 days of your visa application.
- TB test: India is on the list of countries where applicants staying more than 6 months need a tuberculosis test from a Home Office-approved clinic. The certificate is valid for 6 months from the x-ray date.
- Arrival: for courses longer than 6 months you can arrive up to 1 month early, but never before the start date on your visa.

A week-by-week plan for an 11 January start
Here's how the rules stack up if you're starting from scratch at the end of October 2026. The dates are illustrative; use your own university's deadlines.
- Late October to early November: apply to universities with January programmes still open. Book your TB test now, as clinics in India get busy before Christmas.
- By mid-November: have the full funds sitting in the account you'll show. This is the step that most often rules people out. If the money arrives in December, the 28-day clock starts too late for a January visa.
- Mid to late November: meet offer conditions, pay the deposit and complete any pre-CAS interview or credibility checks.
- Late November to early December: receive the CAS and submit the visa application with biometrics straight away.
- December: standard decision within about 3 weeks. Christmas and New Year fall inside this window, so applying in the second half of December leaves almost no margin.
- Early January: travel no earlier than your visa start date and attend orientation.
When January 2027 is probably not realistic
Be honest with yourself if any of these apply:
- You need ATAS clearance and haven't applied. Some science and engineering master's courses require an Academic Technology Approval Scheme certificate before you can even apply for the visa. Gov.uk says ATAS takes at least 30 working days (6 weeks), there is no fast track, and it warns of longer delays over Christmas and New Year.
- Your funds aren't in place by mid-November. Showing borrowed money that's been parked briefly in an account is exactly what credibility checks look for, and it's a common reason for UK student visa refusals.
- You don't yet have an English test score or final transcripts. Retaking a test in November rarely fits a December CAS.
In those cases, deferring to September 2027 is usually the better call. Many universities allow a deferral if you hold an offer; ask before you pay a deposit. Our January vs September intake comparison covers the trade-offs in course choice and part-time jobs.
Does a January 2027 start change your Graduate Route?
Yes. The length of the Graduate visa depends on when you apply for it, not when you started your course. Gov.uk states it is 2 years if you apply on or before 31 December 2026 and 18 months if you apply on or after 1 January 2027 (3 years for PhD graduates). A January 2027 starter on a one-year master's will finish in 2028, so you should plan for 18 months of post-study work, not 2 years. The Graduate Route guide explains eligibility and switching to a Skilled Worker visa.
Rules and university deadlines change. Check gov.uk and your university's international office before you commit money.
Unsure Whether January Still Works for You?
Whether a January start is realistic usually comes down to three dates: when your funds landed, when your CAS can be issued, and whether you need ATAS. Book a consultation with Goodwind and we'll check your actual dates and documents, then tell you honestly whether to push for January 2027 or plan properly for September.
