January vs September Intake: Which Should Indian Students Choose for the UK, Canada and Australia?
If you missed the September intake, or your scores or documents came together late, the January intake looks like an obvious second chance. Is it a weaker intake, though? For the UK and Canada, the honest answer is that it's the same degree with the same visa and post-study rights, but you get fewer courses and a tighter timeline. For Australia the question works the other way round, because February is the main intake. Here's how January vs September intake compares in each country, with deadlines and visa timings checked as of October 2026.
Australia Is Different: February Is the Main Intake
Australian universities run on a calendar year. Semester 1 starts in late February or early March (Australian Catholic University's Semester 1 2027 begins on 1 March 2027), and Semester 2 starts in July or August (ACU: 2 August 2027). The February/March intake has the widest course range, so for Australia the real choice is February vs July, and February is usually the stronger option.
Timing matters for the visa too. Under Ministerial Direction 115, Home Affairs gives each offshore Subclass 500 application a priority based on how close your university is to its allocation on the day you lodge. It aims to start processing Priority 2 applications within 5–8 weeks and Priority 3 within 9–12 weeks, based on 2025 lodgements. Applications lodged between 15 November and 31 December count towards the provider's next year's allocation. India is reported to be at Evidence Level 3, the highest level, so your funds and Genuine Student documents need to be complete from day one. Our guide to Evidence Level 3 for India explains what that means in practice.
Is January a "Weaker" Intake in the UK and Canada?
It isn't weaker in quality. A January-start MSc leads to the same degree, the same Student visa or study permit, and the same post-study work eligibility. Where it is weaker is choice.
- UK: Cardiff University lists just eight taught master's courses starting in January 2027, mostly in business, data science and AI, plus two 18-month healthcare programmes. In September, the full catalogue is open. Where UK universities do offer January starts, the list is usually short and weighted towards business, management and computing.
- Canada: The winter (January) intake is offered only by some institutions and programmes. It's common at colleges and polytechnics (Seneca Polytechnic is taking international applications for January 2027) and much less common for university graduate programmes, which mostly start in September.
Scholarships are the other gap. Many university awards and external schemes are designed around September starts, so check whether each scholarship you're counting on accepts a January start before you commit to one.
Visa Timing Side by Side (as of October 2026)
UK: You can apply for a Student visa up to 6 months before your course starts, and decisions from outside the UK usually take about 3 weeks. The fee is £558. You need £1,529 per month in London or £1,171 per month elsewhere (up to 9 months), held for 28 consecutive days, and that 28-day period must end within 31 days of your application. For a January start, that money has to be in your account by mid-November. The University of Kent's January 2027 timeline is typical:
- 16 November 2026: funds must be in your account to meet the 28-day rule in time
- 27 November 2026: taught postgraduate application deadline
- 15 December 2026: all CAS checks and deposit complete
- 11 January 2027: term starts
Cardiff's international deadline for January 2027 is 4 December, with its CAS deadline on 18 December. Loughborough London closes international applications on 14 December. See our UK Student visa 2026 guide for the full cost breakdown.
Canada: IRCC's posted study permit estimate for applicants in India was about 7 weeks in its 14 October 2026 update (as reported). These estimates change every week, so check IRCC's processing-times tool on the day you apply. Most college programmes need a Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL), while master's and PhD programmes at public institutions are exempt. A January arrival also means landing in the middle of a Canadian winter, so budget for it. Our Canada student visa guide and proof of funds guide cover the documents and current funds figures.
The Trade-Offs That Show Up After You Arrive
- Graduation timing: A one-year UK master's that starts in January ends around January 2028. You'd be job-hunting off the usual autumn graduate recruitment cycle.
- UK Graduate Route: Graduate visa applications made from 1 January 2027 get 18 months instead of two years. Both September 2026 and January 2027 starters will apply after that date, so the intake doesn't change this. Our Graduate Route explainer has the details.
- Course structure: January starters often do their taught modules in a different order, or have summer fall in the middle of the course. Ask the department when the dissertation, placement or co-op term happens.
- Cohort size: January cohorts are usually smaller. That can mean more attention from staff, but fewer societies and events are timed for you.
Which Intake Should You Choose?
- Choose January if: your exact programme is offered then, your test scores and documents are ready now, and your funds can meet the 28-day rule (UK) or full proof-of-funds rules (Canada) without last-minute transfers.
- Choose September if: your target course or university only starts in September, you're relying on a scholarship, or you'd have to rush your SOP, test retake or funds to make January. A rushed application is a bigger risk than an eight-month wait.
- For Australia: aim for February/March if you can lodge a complete visa application in good time. Otherwise, July is a sensible fallback rather than a lesser option.
If you're working back from a specific start date, our month-by-month application timeline and Australia Subclass 500 guide show what has to happen when. Intake dates, processing times and visa rules change often, so confirm every date on the university's own page and on gov.uk, canada.ca or immi.homeaffairs.gov.au before you apply.
