Proof of Funds for a Student Visa from India: What Officers Accept (and What Gets Refused)
Proof of funds for a student visa is where many strong Indian applications quietly fall apart. Not because the family can't afford the course, but because the money is shown in the wrong form, in the wrong window, or with no explanation of where it came from. This guide covers how much the US, UK, Canada and Australia ask for, which Indian documents (bank statements, FDs, loan sanction letters, ITRs, CA reports) actually carry weight, and what gets refused. Figures are as of October 2026 and change often, so check the official page linked for your country before you apply.
How Much Proof of Funds Each Country Asks For
- USA (F-1): US regulations require "documentary evidence of financial support in the amount indicated on the Form I-20." That figure is your university's estimate of one academic year of tuition and living costs. At the interview, the officer can also ask how you will pay for the whole program, not just year one (travel.state.gov).
- UK (Student visa): Any unpaid course fees shown on your CAS, plus living costs of £1,529 a month in London or £1,171 a month elsewhere, for up to 9 months. Indian nationals are not exempt from showing this (gov.uk).
- Canada (study permit): First-year tuition plus CAD 23,448 for living costs (single applicant outside Quebec, for applications submitted on or after 1 September 2026), plus travel (IRCC).
- Australia (Subclass 500): At least AUD 29,710 a year for living costs, on top of tuition and travel (Study Australia). How much documentation you have to file depends on your evidence level, so run the Home Affairs Document Checklist Tool for your university.

Indian Documents That Actually Carry Weight
Savings accounts and fixed deposits. These are the backbone of most files. Canada asks for bank statements from the past 6 months, with documentation of where the income came from. The UK is stricter on timing: the money must be held for 28 consecutive days, and your latest statement must be dated no more than 31 days before you apply. It must also be money you can access immediately, so check that any FD you rely on can be withdrawn without restriction.
Education loan sanction letters. All four countries accept bank loans. The UK spells out the detail: the loan must come from a government-sponsored, academic or regulated educational loan scheme, and the letter must be dated within 6 months of your application and confirm the amount and that it is for you. A final sanction letter carries far more weight than an enquiry or a quotation. Our public bank vs private bank vs NBFC guide covers which lender to choose.
ITRs, Form 16 and salary slips. These don't count as funds on their own. What they do is explain where the savings came from. Canada asks for documentation of income sources, and a sponsor letter must state the sponsor's job, relationship to you, number of dependants and the amount of support. Two or three years of a parent's ITRs that match the bank balance are the simplest way to show the money is genuine.
CA net-worth reports. These are common in India and useful as a summary, but they are supporting evidence only. A report listing property and investments doesn't replace a bank statement. The UK explicitly excludes stocks, shares, pensions and cryptocurrency from counting as funds.
What Gets Proof of Funds Refused
- Large, unexplained recent deposits. A balance that jumps a few weeks before you apply, with no matching sale, maturity or income record, is the classic red flag.
- Borrowed "show money". Money parked in your account by a relative or agent, to be returned after the visa, isn't genuinely available to you. Presenting it as your own is misrepresentation, and it can lead to refusal and a bar on future applications. If you've been refused before, read how past refusals must be declared.
- Missing the UK 28-day window. A single day below the required balance, or a statement older than 31 days, is enough for a refusal.
- Parents' accounts with no consent. The UK accepts money in a parent's account only if they control it and give a letter agreeing to you using it.
- Illiquid assets. Land, a house, shares or a PF balance listed as "funds" won't meet the requirement, however large they are.
What to Do Before You Apply
Start with the official figure for your country and add your actual first-year tuition. Then decide on the mix: savings, an FD, a loan, or a combination. Keep the money where it is (for the UK, at least 28 days before the statement date), and collect ITRs or income proof that explain how it built up. Finally, cross-check everything against our student visa documents checklist by country. If you've already been refused on funds in Canada, our guide to reading the officer's notes explains how to fix the gap before you reapply.
