Canada vs Australia for Indian Students in 2026: Which Is Better?
Canada vs Australia is one of the most common decisions Indian students face, and both countries have tightened their rules since 2024. The honest answer in 2026: Canada is usually cheaper and gives master's graduates a longer, more flexible work permit, while Australia gives Indian graduates extra post-study years under a trade deal and is easier on seat availability, but costs more. Here's how they compare on the things that actually decide the outcome.
Getting In: Caps and Visa Scrutiny
Canada will issue up to 408,000 study permits in 2026, and only about 155,000 of those are for new arrivals. Master's and PhD students no longer need a Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL) from January 2026, but they still count against a 49,000-permit allocation within the cap. Refusal rates for Indian applicants remain high, so your study plan and funds carry real weight. See our Canada student visa 2026 guide for the full process.
Australia set its 2026 National Planning Level at 295,000 new international students, 25,000 more than 2025. It's not a hard cap, but applications to providers that have used up their allocation get processed more slowly. The bigger hurdle for Indians is the Genuine Student (GS) requirement, where officers test whether your course actually fits your background and plans. Our post on answering the GS questions covers this in detail.
Cost: Tuition, Proof of Funds and Visa Fees
- Canada: Most university master's programs run roughly CAD 20,000–45,000 a year. From 1 September 2026, a single applicant must show CAD 23,448 for living costs, on top of first-year tuition and travel. The study permit fee is CAD 150.
- Australia: Master's tuition typically runs AUD 35,000–55,000 a year. You must show AUD 29,710 for 12 months of living costs, plus tuition and travel. The Student visa (subclass 500) fee rose to AUD 2,500 on 1 July 2026.
In rupee terms, Australia is usually the more expensive of the two, and a typical Australian master's runs two years while many Canadian master's programs finish in 12–20 months. For a full rupee breakdown, see our cost of studying abroad guide. Figures as of September 2026. Verify on canada.ca and immi.homeaffairs.gov.au before applying.
Working While You Study
The rules are close. Canada allows 24 hours a week off campus during term, with unlimited hours in scheduled breaks, and from April 2026 required co-op placements no longer need a separate work permit. Australia allows 48 hours per fortnight during term, unlimited in breaks. Australia's higher minimum wage means part-time income goes further, but neither will cover tuition, so don't plan your budget around it.
Post-Study Work Rights
Canada's Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) gives any eligible master's graduate up to 3 years, as long as the program was at least 8 months long. Bachelor's programs of 2+ years also get up to 3 years. University graduates need a CLB 7 language score to apply, and college programs face field-of-study restrictions. Details are in our PGWP 2026 guide.
Australia's Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) is where Indians have a specific edge. Under the Australia–India ECTA, Indian graduates get up to 2 years after a bachelor's (3 with first-class honours in STEM/ICT), 3 years after any master's, and 4 years after a PhD. The catches: you must have studied at least two academic years in Australia, be 35 or under, score IELTS 6.5 or equivalent, and pay a AUD 5,750 application fee.
The Path to PR
Canada's route is clearer for most students: a year of skilled Canadian work experience makes you eligible for the Canadian Experience Class under Express Entry, and a provincial nomination adds 600 points. Our Express Entry vs PNP explainer breaks this down. Australia's skilled migration points test (65 minimum, but invitations go to far higher scores in most occupations) is tougher to crack, and it favours occupations on the skills lists, regional study, and strong English. In both countries, PR is competitive and not guaranteed. Pick a course you'd take even if PR didn't work out.
Which Should You Choose?
- Choose Canada if: you want a 1-year or 16-month master's, a lower total cost, and a 3-year work permit that doesn't depend on a 2-year program. It's also the better fit if Express Entry PR is your main goal.
- Choose Australia if: you're doing a 2-year master's or PhD and want the extra ECTA years (up to 4 for a PhD). It also makes sense if your field is on Australia's skills lists, or if you've been refused by Canada and have a clean, coherent study plan.
