1-Year UK Master's vs 2-Year Canadian Master's: The Real Trade-Off for Indian Students

A 1-year UK master's costs less and gets you earning sooner. A 2-year Canadian master's costs more but gives you a longer work permit, lets your spouse work, and leads to a far clearer PR path. Which one is "better" depends almost entirely on one question: do you want an international degree and a few years of work experience, or do you want to settle abroad? This post compares the two on cost, post-study work, family and PR, using official rules as of October 2026.

Cost: The UK Master's Is Usually Cheaper Overall

The UK's biggest advantage is simple: you pay for one year, not two.

  • UK: Taught master's fees for international students typically run £18,000–£35,000 for the full course. For the visa you must show living costs of £1,529/month in London or £1,171/month elsewhere, for up to 9 months — roughly £13,800 or £10,500.
  • Canada: Master's tuition typically runs CAD 20,000–45,000 per year, so double it for a 2-year program. IRCC now asks for CAD 23,448 per year in living funds for applications submitted from 1 September 2026, on top of first-year tuition.

The extra year in Canada also means an extra year of rent and an extra year out of the job market. Canada narrows the gap with work rights: you can work 24 hours a week off campus during term and unlimited hours in scheduled breaks, and many 2-year programs include a co-op term. UK students are capped at 20 hours a week in term, and for most 1-year master's the summer dissertation period counts as term-time. For rupee totals, see our cost of studying abroad breakdown.

Post-Study Work: Canada Gives You More Time

This is where the comparison flips.

  • Canada's PGWP: Master's graduates get a 3-year Post-Graduation Work Permit, even if the program was under two years, as long as it lasted at least 8 months. You'll need language test results when you apply. Details in our PGWP 2026 guide.
  • UK Graduate Route: Currently 2 years, but applications made on or after 1 January 2027 get only 18 months. If you start a 1-year master's in September 2026 or later, you'll finish after that date. Plan for 18 months, not 2 years. See our Graduate Route explainer.

So the "1 year vs 2 years" framing is misleading. The real comparison is about 2.5 years in the UK (1 year of study plus 18 months of work) against 5 years in Canada (2 years of study plus 3 years of work), with far more time in Canada to build experience that counts toward PR.

Bringing a Spouse: A Hard No in the UK, Yes in Canada

For married applicants, this often decides it.

  • UK: Since January 2024, students on taught master's courses cannot bring dependants. Only PhD or research-based postgraduate students (and government-sponsored students) can.
  • Canada: Spouses of master's students can apply for an open work permit if the program is 16 months or longer. A 2-year master's qualifies. A 12-month one-year master's in Canada does not.

If your spouse plans to come with you and work, a UK taught master's is effectively off the table.

Staying Long-Term: PR Is the Real Difference

In Canada, a master's plus a year of skilled Canadian work on your PGWP sets you up for Express Entry through the Canadian Experience Class. Provincial nominee streams can add more points on top of that. It's competitive and draw cut-offs shift, but the path is well-defined. Our Express Entry vs PNP post explains how the two routes fit together.

In the UK, the Graduate Route doesn't count toward settlement. To stay, you need an employer to sponsor you on a Skilled Worker visa. The general salary threshold is £41,700, and recent graduates can qualify at a lower rate (from £33,400) in eligible roles. The government has also proposed stretching the standard path to settlement from 5 to 10 years. The UK is a strong place to build a CV, but a harder place to settle.

One practical note for Canada: from 2026, master's and PhD students at public institutions no longer need a Provincial Attestation Letter. That has made 2-year master's study permits simpler to apply for than college diplomas.

Which Should You Choose?

  • Choose the 1-year UK master's if: you want a recognised degree and some international work experience at the lowest total cost, you're single or your spouse will stay in India, and you're open to returning home or moving on after 18 months.
  • Choose the 2-year Canadian master's if: permanent residence is the goal, you're bringing a spouse who needs to work, or you want co-op experience and a 3-year work permit to find the right job.
  • Think twice about both if: you're stretching your budget with a large education loan and have no clear job target. A cheaper degree that doesn't lead to a job costs more than an expensive one that does.

Fees, fund amounts and visa rules are as of October 2026. Verify on gov.uk and canada.ca before applying.
