Documents Required for a Visitor Visa: USA, UK, and Schengen Countries

Whether you're visiting family in London, attending a conference in New York, or touring Europe, you'll need a visitor visa — and the documents required vary significantly by country. This guide breaks down exactly what Indian applicants need for a US B1/B2 visa, a UK Standard Visitor visa, and a Schengen visa. The core logic is the same across all three: prove why you're going, how you'll fund the trip, and that you'll return home.

US B1/B2 Visitor Visa

The B1/B2 is the standard US visitor visa — B1 for business activities, B2 for tourism, and most applicants receive both combined. As of September 2025, in-person interviews are mandatory for nearly all applicants; the previous interview waiver programme has been largely eliminated. Here's what to bring:

  • Valid passport — minimum 6 months validity beyond your intended stay, with at least 2 blank pages
  • DS-160 confirmation page — complete the online form at ceac.state.gov and print the barcode confirmation
  • MRV fee receipt — proof of the $185 application fee payment (note: a new $250 Visa Integrity Fee applies after visa issuance from October 2025 onwards)
  • Visa appointment confirmation letter
  • Financial proof — last 3–6 months of bank statements showing sufficient funds for your trip
  • Proof of ties to India — this is the most critical document category; include employment letter or business registration, property documents, and/or family records
  • Travel itinerary — planned flights, hotel reservations, and dates of travel
  • Purpose-specific documents — invitation letter from a US company (B1), or host's invitation letter and their proof of status (B2 family visit)

The consular officer's main concern is whether you'll return to India when the visa expires. Prior travel history to the UK, Schengen, or Canada helps significantly, as does stable employment or business ownership. A letter of invitation from a US contact is not required and doesn't replace the obligation to demonstrate your own ties to India.

How Goodwind helps with US visa applications: The US interview is where many Indian applicants struggle — not always because of missing documents, but because they haven't clearly articulated their situation. We help you understand what the consular officer is looking for, present your ties to India accurately and completely, and make sure your application reflects your circumstances truthfully. UK Standard Visitor Visa

Indians must apply for a UK Standard Visitor visa regardless of trip purpose — ETA is not applicable for Indian passport holders. The visa allows a maximum stay of 6 months per visit, and long-term options (2, 5, or 10 years) are available for frequent travellers. The application is submitted online, followed by a biometric appointment at a VFS Global centre. Current fee: £127 for a standard 6-month visa (as of April 2025). Processing typically takes 3 weeks; priority costs an additional £500.

  • Valid passport — must cover your entire stay; bring all old passports too
  • Online application form (VAF1A) — completed on the UK government's visa portal
  • Passport-sized photographs — 2 photos, 50×50mm, white background, taken within the last 6 months
  • Bank statements — last 6 months, bank-certified
  • Proof of employment or business — employer letter confirming role, salary, approved leave, and return-to-work date; or business registration and ITR acknowledgements if self-employed
  • ITR/Form 16 — income tax returns for the past 2–3 years
  • Travel itinerary — flight bookings and hotel reservations
  • Accommodation proof — hotel bookings or an invitation from a UK host with proof of their address and status
  • Covering letter — a clear, concise letter explaining your purpose, itinerary, who you're travelling with, how you're funding the trip, and your ties to India

The UK does not publish a fixed bank balance requirement, but your statements should show enough to cover all accommodation, travel, and daily expenses without any sudden large deposits that look like borrowed funds. Inconsistencies between your application form and supporting documents are the most common reason for refusals.

How Goodwind helps with UK visa applications: The covering letter is one of the most underrated parts of a UK application — a vague or incomplete one can weaken an otherwise strong file. We help you draft a covering letter that accurately represents your purpose and circumstances, review your supporting documents for completeness, and make sure your application is consistent throughout. If you've had a prior UK refusal, we'll help you understand what was missing and address it factually in the new application. Talk to us before you apply.

Schengen Visitor Visa (Germany, France, Italy, Greece, Iceland, and 24 others)

A single Schengen visa covers 29 European countries for up to 90 days within any 180-day period. You apply at the consulate of the country where you'll spend the most time — if visiting multiple countries equally, apply at the first country of entry. All applications go through VFS Global; there is no e-visa for Indian passport holders. Fee: €80 (approximately ₹7,200).

  • Schengen visa application form — completed via VIDEX or the specific country's e-portal, printed and signed
  • Valid passport — issued within the last 10 years, with at least 3 months validity after your planned return, and minimum 2 blank pages; all old passports must also be submitted
  • 2 passport photographs — ICAO-compliant, taken within the last 3 months, white background
  • Travel medical insurance — mandatory, minimum coverage of €30,000, valid across the entire Schengen area for the full duration of your trip; must be from an approved Indian insurer
  • Bank statements — last 3 months, stamped and signed by your bank on every page (printouts without a bank stamp are rejected); balance should reflect approximately €50–100 per day of stay
  • ITR acknowledgement — last 2 assessment years (ITR-V only; passbook copies are not accepted)
  • Employment proof — pay slips for 3 months, employment contract, and leave sanction letter from your employer; if self-employed: GST/company registration and ITR
  • Proof of accommodation — hotel bookings for each country visited; or a host's invitation with their address proof and passport/ID copy
  • Flight itinerary — confirmed onward and return flights
  • Ties to India — property documents, family proof, or anything showing strong reason to return

The Schengen process is the most document-intensive of the three. The most common India-specific mistakes: submitting digital bank statement printouts without a bank stamp, missing old passports, and inconsistent travel dates across documents. Start collecting documents at least 4–6 weeks before your intended application date.

How Goodwind helps with Schengen applications: Schengen refusals are often caused by small, fixable errors — an unstamped bank statement, a date mismatch between your itinerary and insurance certificate, or a form submitted to the wrong consulate. We review your complete application before submission to make sure every document is accurate, correctly formatted, and consistent with the rest of your file. One Document That Matters More Than All Others

Across all three visa types, the single biggest differentiator is evidence of strong ties to India — your reason to return. This means stable employment or an active business, property ownership, financial obligations, and family dependants. The documents themselves (bank statements, employer letters, ITR) are just evidence for that underlying argument. A technically complete application with weak ties will still get refused; a strong, factually accurate picture of your life in India is what gets approved.
