US Visitor Visa Appointment Dates in India: Why the Wait Is So Long (2025–26)

Travellers waiting at an airport departure lounge

If you're applying for a US B1/B2 visitor visa from India right now, the wait for an appointment date is one of the first shocks you'll face. Depending on which city you apply in, you could be looking at anywhere from 3 months to nearly 10 months just to get an interview slot — before the actual processing even begins. Here's what's driving those delays and what you can realistically do about it.

Why Are Wait Times So Long Right Now?

The short answer: demand is very high and available interview slots have not kept pace.

Post-pandemic visa demand recovered faster than consular staffing did. The five US consulates in India — Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad, and Kolkata — are processing far more B1/B2 applications than at any point before 2020, while interview capacity has stayed roughly the same.

A second, more recent factor made things significantly worse: the end of broad interview waiver eligibility. For years, many Indian applicants renewing US visas could use the "Dropbox" system — submitting documents at a Visa Application Centre without attending an in-person interview. From February 2025 onward, the US State Department progressively tightened this. By September 2, 2025, interview waivers were ended for most visa categories. Applicants who previously would have done Dropbox renewals — including F1, H1B, and L1 holders — now need full in-person interviews. That has pushed a large additional volume of applicants into the same queues as B1/B2 first-timers.

Current Wait Times by City (as of Early 2026)

Wait times vary significantly by consulate and shift regularly. Based on State Department data updated in February 2026:

  • Mumbai: ~9.5 months average wait; next available around 10 months out
  • New Delhi: 6.5 to 10 months depending on timing
  • Hyderabad: 5 to 8 months
  • Kolkata: 2.5 to 5 months
  • Chennai: 1.5 to 3.5 months — currently the fastest option in India

The gap between Chennai and Mumbai is significant enough that some applicants specifically choose Chennai for their interview even if they don't live there. You can book at any consulate in India regardless of your home city.

Always verify the latest figures on the US State Department's Global Visa Wait Times page before making plans — these numbers shift week to week.

What Changed With the Dropbox / Interview Waiver in 2025

This is worth understanding because it directly affects renewal applicants.

Previously, if your previous US visa had expired within 48 months and you were applying in the same category, you were eligible to skip the in-person interview and submit documents through the Dropbox. The State Department tightened this in February 2025, reducing the eligibility window to 12 months — same category, expired within the last 12 months only. Then in September 2025, they went further: interview waivers were ended entirely for H1B, F1, L1, and most other categories, with only B1/B2 renewals retaining any meaningful Dropbox eligibility under strict conditions.

The practical effect: thousands of additional applicants who previously handled renewals in 2–3 weeks through Dropbox are now joining the in-person interview queue. This is directly adding to B1/B2 wait times as well.

If you're renewing a B1/B2 and your previous visa expired within the last 12 months, you may still qualify for Dropbox — the eligibility check happens automatically when you complete the DS-160 and create a profile on ustraveldocs.com. Don't assume eligibility; let the system confirm it.

What Can You Actually Do About It

Apply as early as possible. With Mumbai and Delhi slots stretching 8–10 months out, anyone planning US travel in late 2026 needs to be applying now. The MRV fee (currently USD 185, approximately ₹15,800–16,000) is valid for one year from payment, giving you the window to schedule.

Check Chennai if you can travel there. Chennai consistently shows the shortest wait times across all recent data. If your travel timeline is tight and you can get to Chennai for an interview, it's worth considering seriously.

Monitor for cancellations. The State Department releases new appointment batches regularly, and cancellations appear on the booking portal with little notice. Some applicants check the portal daily and land slots several months ahead of the stated average. One fee payment allows unlimited rescheduling without penalty.

Consider an emergency appointment only if the urgency is genuine. Emergency slots exist for medical emergencies, funerals, urgent business, and in some cases academic start dates. They are not a general workaround — consular officers assess urgency and requests that don't meet the threshold are denied.

Make sure your application is strong before you go in. With waits this long, an administrative processing delay (221g) after your interview — which can add weeks or months — is especially costly. The best protection is a well-prepared application: consistent DS-160, strong ties to India, clear travel purpose, and complete supporting documents.

Applying From a Third Country

Some applicants explore booking appointments at US consulates outside India — the UAE, Singapore, and some Southeast Asian posts have shown waits of one month or less for Indian passport holders. This is technically permitted and you don't need to be a resident of that country to apply. That said, consular officers may ask why you're applying outside your home country, and it adds travel cost and complexity. It's a legitimate option for people with very tight timelines, not a shortcut that works for everyone.
