US vs Canada vs UK for Indian Students in 2026: A Straight Comparison
If you're choosing between the US, Canada, and the UK this year, you're making that decision in the most complicated environment for Indian students in over a decade. All three countries have changed their rules. This post breaks down what actually matters: cost, post-study work rights, visa risk, and long-term options.
The US: Strong Universities, Weaker Guarantees
The academic brand is still unmatched — US universities dominate global rankings and a top degree opens doors everywhere. But 2026 has made the fine print harder to ignore. Tuition for a Master's runs roughly ₹30–60 lakhs/year. A new $250 Visa Integrity Fee pushes total F1 visa costs to around ₹44,000 before living expenses.
The bigger concern is after graduation. OPT — which allows up to 3 years of post-study work — is under active DHS review. It hasn't been cut yet, but the uncertainty is real. F1 visa approvals for Indian students dropped sharply in 2025, and interview wait times remain high. Go to the US if you have a specific program and career plan in mind. Don't rely on post-study work as a certainty.
As of April 2026 — verify OPT status at uscis.gov before applying.
Canada: Clearest Path to PR
Canada remains the most structured route from student to permanent resident. The Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) gives Master's graduates up to 3 years of open work authorization — work for any employer, anywhere — which feeds directly into Express Entry or Provincial Nominee Programs.
- Master's tuition: CAD 18,000–45,000/year (~₹11–28 lakhs)
- Proof of funds required: CAD 22,895 for living expenses (excluding tuition)
- Total first-year budget: expect ₹25–35 lakhs all-in
One important 2026 rule: PGWP eligibility for college diploma students is now tied to approved CIP program codes. If you're doing a Master's or Bachelor's at a public university, you're exempt — all university degrees qualify. If you're considering a college diploma, verify your program's CIP code on IRCC's approved list before paying tuition.
The UK: Fast Degree, Shrinking Post-Study Window
A 1-year Master's means you're done and earning a year faster than in Canada or the US. Tuition typically runs ₹17–40 lakhs for most programs (London costs significantly more). The Graduate Route currently gives 2 years of post-study work for Master's graduates — but for applications from January 1, 2027 onwards, this drops to 18 months. Most students starting in September 2026 will fall under the new 18-month rule.
Settling permanently in the UK has also become harder — the minimum qualifying period for settlement increased from 5 years to 10 years. As a PR pathway, it's the weakest of the three.
Total visa costs (application fee + Immigration Health Surcharge) for a 1-year Master's: approximately ₹2.8–3.0 lakhs.
Which Should You Choose?
- Choose the US if: you're targeting a top-ranked STEM or business program and have a clear US career plan — and you can handle visa uncertainty.
- Choose Canada if: PR is part of your long-term plan and you want stable post-study work rights. Master's at a public university is the safest route.
- Choose the UK if: you want to finish your degree fast, cost-per-year matters, and you're not planning to settle there long-term.
