UK Student Visa for Indian Students: What You Actually Need
The UK Student visa (formerly Tier 4) is one of the more straightforward study visas for Indians — if you know what to prepare. Most rejections come from three avoidable mistakes: wrong financial documents, a missing CAS, or applying too early. Here's what you need to get it right the first time.
The CAS Is Your Starting Point
Before you can even apply, your UK university must issue you a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) — a unique reference number that ties your visa application to your specific offer. Without it, the application doesn't move. Universities typically issue the CAS 6–8 weeks before your course start date, so you won't be applying months in advance like with a US F1.
Once you have the CAS, you have a 6-month window to submit your visa application. Don't apply before receiving it — the application literally requires the CAS number.
Financial Requirement: The Number That Trips Most Applicants
You must show you can cover your tuition for the first year plus living costs. For 2025–26, UKVI requires:
- Tuition: The exact first-year fee listed on your CAS
- Living costs (London): £1,334/month × up to 9 months = £12,006
- Living costs (outside London): £1,023/month × up to 9 months = £9,207
These funds must have been held in your (or a parent's) bank account for a continuous 28-day period ending no more than 31 days before your application date. A single large deposit right before applying won't work — UKVI checks the 28-day statement, not just the balance.
What the Application Actually Involves
The UK Student visa is applied for online through the UKVI portal. After submitting online, you attend a biometrics appointment at a Visa Application Centre (VAC) — in India, these are run by VFS Global in major cities including Ahmedabad, Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, and Bangalore.
Key documents to bring to your VAC appointment:
- Valid passport (must be valid for the full duration of your course)
- CAS reference number and details
- 28-day bank statements showing required funds
- English language test results (IELTS Academic, typically 6.0–6.5 overall)
- Academic transcripts and degree certificates
- ATAS certificate if your subject requires it (mainly postgrad science/tech)
Processing time from VAC appointment is typically 3–4 weeks for standard applications. You can pay for priority (£500 extra) to get a decision in 5 working days if timing is tight.
Timeline: When to Start
- Accept your offer: As soon as you decide
- Receive CAS: 6–8 weeks before course start
- Ensure funds are in account: At least 28 days before you plan to apply
- Submit online application + book VAC: As soon as CAS arrives
- Attend VAC biometrics: Within days of submission
- Receive decision: 3–4 weeks later (standard) or 5 working days (priority)
For a September intake, most students receive their CAS in July and aim to apply by late July — giving a comfortable buffer before departure.
