Student Visa Documents: What You Need for the USA, UK, Canada, Australia, and Germany
The paperwork for a student visa is the same across every country in one way: one missing document is enough to delay or reject your entire application. This post breaks down exactly what each country requires — not just the obvious ones, but the country-specific documents that catch students off guard. Verify current requirements directly on official government sites before applying, as thresholds and rules change.
USA (F-1 Visa)
The F-1 is the standard student visa for US universities, language programs, and accredited colleges. The non-negotiable documents are:
- Form I-20 — issued by your SEVP-certified university after acceptance. This is your core document. You and your school official both sign it.
- DS-160 — the online non-immigrant visa application form. You must print the confirmation page.
- Valid passport — must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended stay.
- SEVIS I-901 fee receipt — you pay this before your interview. As of 2025, it's $350.
- Visa application fee receipt — $185.
- Proof of financial support — bank statements, sponsor letters, or scholarship letters showing you can cover tuition and living costs.
- Academic transcripts and test scores — the consular officer may ask for these to confirm your preparation for the program.
Two important 2025 updates: as of September 2025, most F-1 applicants must attend an in-person interview — pandemic-era waivers are largely gone. And since June 2025, applicants must set their social media profiles to public as part of the application. Interview wait times at US embassies in India can stretch 4–8 weeks in peak season (June–August), so apply early.
Goodwind works with students applying to US universities across engineering, business, and STEM programs. If you're unsure whether your financial documents meet the consular officer's standard — or you want a mock interview before the real one — book a consultation with us.
UK (Student Visa)
The UK Student visa replaced the old Tier 4 in 2021. The application is online, and from January 2025, you receive an eVisa — physical Biometric Residence Permits are no longer issued. Core documents:
- Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) — your university issues this after you accept an unconditional offer. It's a reference number, not a paper letter. You cannot apply without it.
- Valid passport
- Proof of funds — £1,483 per month for up to nine months for courses in London, or £1,136 per month for courses outside London, held for at least 28 consecutive days before applying, plus first-year tuition.
- English language evidence — IELTS, TOEFL, or equivalent. Often embedded in your CAS, but check with your university.
- ATAS certificate — required if your subject is a sensitive technology or STEM field at postgraduate level. Check gov.uk for the current list.
- TB test results — mandatory for Indian applicants. You must get tested at a UK-approved clinic in India before applying.
The application fee is £524 plus the Immigration Health Surcharge of £776 per year. Decisions typically come within 3 weeks. Verify all current thresholds on gov.uk/student-visa before applying.
The 28-day funds rule is where many Ahmedabad applicants slip up — money transferred last-minute doesn't qualify. Goodwind helps you plan your finances so your bank statements are clean and timed correctly before you apply. Talk to us before you book your TB test — that's the right time to get your document checklist confirmed.
Canada (Study Permit)
Canada calls it a study permit, not a student visa — though Indian nationals also need a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV), which IRCC issues automatically when your study permit is approved. Two requirements introduced since 2024 that many students miss:
- Letter of Acceptance from a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) — your school must be on IRCC's approved DLI list. Private colleges not on the list won't work.
- Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL) — most new applicants must include a PAL from the province where they'll study. Your institution typically initiates this, but confirm before applying.
- Proof of funds — for applications submitted from September 2025, the minimum living expense requirement (outside Québec) is CAD $22,895 for a single applicant, on top of tuition and travel. Verify the current figure on ircc.canada.ca before applying.
- Valid passport
- Statement of Purpose (SOP) — IRCC uses this to assess whether you're a genuine student with clear academic intent and plans to leave Canada after graduation.
- Biometrics — fingerprints and photo, collected at a Visa Application Centre.
- Medical exam results — only if IRCC requests them, typically for programs longer than 6 months involving public contact.
The SDS fast-track route was discontinued in late 2024 — all Indian applicants now use the regular process, which takes roughly 6–8 weeks from biometrics submission. Apply at least 3–4 months before your program starts.
Canada is Goodwind's strongest track — we've guided students through the PAL process, SOP writing, and the post-SDS transition. If you're applying for a September or January intake, start your consultation now — PAL allocation limits vary by province and fill up.
Australia (Student Visa — Subclass 500)
Australia's student visa has one document that's genuinely different from the other four countries — and it's the one that most catches applicants out:
- Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) — issued by a CRICOS-registered institution. Without a CoE, you cannot lodge a visa application. Check that your institution is on the CRICOS register before accepting an offer.
- Genuine Student (GS) statement — the Genuine Student requirement replaced the old GTE requirement in March 2024. You answer structured questions in your ImmiAccount about your reasons for study, ties to India, and career plans. Each response is capped at 150 words and carries significant weight in the assessment.
- Proof of funds — AUD $29,710 per year for living costs for the primary applicant in 2025, plus tuition and return airfare.
- Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) — mandatory before your visa is processed. Purchase through your institution or providers like Bupa, Medibank, or Allianz. Coverage must align with your CoE dates.
- English proficiency scores — IELTS, PTE Academic, TOEFL iBT, or Cambridge C1 Advanced. Minimum scores vary by institution and course level.
- Valid passport, academic transcripts, and a CV
The visa fee rose to AUD $2,000 from July 2025. Processing takes 2–8 weeks depending on your institution's priority level. Confirm current requirements at immi.homeaffairs.gov.au.
The GS statement is what determines approval for most borderline cases — and most students underestimate how carefully it's read. Goodwind helps you draft a GS statement that's specific, credible, and directly addresses what Australian immigration looks for. Book a session before you start writing yours.
Germany (National Student Visa)
Germany is uniquely demanding for Indian students due to one document that doesn't exist in any other country's process:
- APS Certificate — issued by the Academic Evaluation Centre at the German Embassy in New Delhi. It is mandatory for all Indian students applying to degree courses exceeding 90 days in Germany, covering both online and on-campus programs. It verifies that your Indian academic credentials are genuine. You cannot book a visa appointment without it. Indian students typically wait 10–14 weeks for processing. The fee is ₹18,000. Start this first — everything else follows.
- University admission letter — a formal offer from a recognised German university, specifying your name, course, duration, and language of instruction.
- Blocked Account confirmation — you must show access to €11,904 per year, with a monthly withdrawal limit of €992. Open a blocked account with a provider like Fintiba or Deutsche Bank before applying.
- Language proficiency — B2 level in German for German-taught programs (Goethe-Institut certificate). For English-taught programs, IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL 80 minimum.
- Academic transcripts and certificates — originals plus two copies of all mark sheets, degree certificates, and semester transcripts.
- CV in EU format — listing your academic background, work experience if any, and language certifications.
- Letter of Motivation — explaining why you chose this specific program and how it fits your career goals.
- Valid passport — minimum 3 months validity beyond your visa appointment date, with at least 2 blank pages.
Since January 2025, Indian students apply through the Consular Services Portal (CSP) at digital.diplo.de — the old VFS queue system is no longer used. Processing takes 6–12 weeks after submission. Verify current requirements at the German Embassy India website before applying.
Germany is increasingly popular with Ahmedabad students — low tuition at public universities makes it hard to ignore. But the APS timeline alone means you need a 12-month runway from decision to departure. Goodwind helps you sequence the APS, university applications, blocked account, and visa in the right order so nothing delays anything else. Start the conversation early.
One Practical Note for All Five Countries
Build at least 4–6 months of runway from offer letter to departure — and for Germany, 12 months. The APS certificate takes 10–14 weeks. Canadian PALs depend on provincial allocation limits. UK funds must sit in your account for 28 consecutive days. And F-1 visa interview slots in India get booked out weeks in advance during peak season. The students who face delays almost always started late.
