The standard visa for Indian students is the Fee-Paying Student Visa, required for any full-time program lasting more than three months. Applications are submitted entirely online through the Immigration New Zealand (INZ) portal — there is no paper application route.

• Admission offer: From an NZQA-accredited institution (non-accredited institutions will get your visa rejected outright)
• Funds proof: NZD 20,000 per year for living costs, plus first-year tuition. Bank statements should show a stable history — large unexplained deposits close to the application date are a common reason for delays
• English proficiency: IELTS 6.0 overall (no band below 5.5) for most bachelor's programs; 6.5 for most master's programs. PTE and TOEFL are also accepted
• Health and character: Medical certificate and chest X-ray required; police clearance from India

Processing typically takes 8–10 weeks, though INZ data shows 80% of properly documented applications are decided within five weeks. Apply at least 3–4 months before your intended start date. Verify current requirements at immigration.govt.nz before applying.

Tuition Fees and Living Costs

NZ tuition is lower than the US or UK but not inexpensive. For 2026 intakes, indicative annual fees at New Zealand's public universities are:

• Think carefully if: you're doing a 3-year bachelor's — total costs are comparable to Australia but NZ's job market for new graduates is smaller, which matters when you're building the work experience needed for residency
• PR pathway exists but takes time: PSWV → skilled work experience → Skilled Migrant Category (points-based) is the route. It works, but NZ's total population is 5 million — job opportunities in niche fields are limited compared to Australia or Canada
